Menu 101: Understanding Categories, Products & Modifiers

A well-structured menu consists of three key elements: Categories, Products, and Modifiers. Understanding how these work together will help you build a seamless ordering experience.

Categories

Categories help organise your menu into logical sections so customers can easily find what they’re looking for.
βœ… Examples:

  • Coffee
  • Breakfast
  • Burgers
  • Sides
  • Drinks

πŸ”Ή Best Practices:

  • Keep category names simple and clear.
  • Order them based on popularity or logical meal progression (i.e., Breakfast β†’ Lunch β†’ Drinks β†’ Desserts or Burgers β†’ Sides β†’ Drinks).
  • Avoid overcrowding of products in a single category.

Products

Products are the individual menu items that customers can order within each category.

βœ… Examples:

  • Cappuccino (under "Coffee")
  • Egg & Bacon Roll (under "Breakfast")
  • Cheeseburger (under "Burgers")

πŸ”Ή Best Practices:

  • Use clear and appetising names (i.e., Chicken Burger β†’ Spicy Chicken Burger).
  • Include concise but engaging descriptions (mention key ingredients, flavours, or unique selling points).
  • Add high-quality images to help customers visualise the product.
    • Ensure images are high-resolution and well-lit.

    • Avoid cluttered or overly edited photos.

Modifiers

Modifiers allow customers to customise their order, increasing flexibility and average order value. Modifiers can be free, or add-ons that charge extra on top of the base price of a product.

βœ… Examples:

  • Milk Options: Full Cream, Lite, Soy, Oat
  • Burger Add-Ons: Extra Bacon, Extra Cheese, Extra Patty
  • Side Choice: Chips, Sweet Potato Chips (+$2), Salad

πŸ”Ή Best Practices:

  • Use modifier groups as a method of upselling and increasing average order value (i.e. Pizza Extras)
  • Ensure modifier names are clear and appetising (i.e. cheese ➜ Extra Cheese)
  • Sort your modifier groups in a logical manner (i.e. for a Burger; Bun Choice ➜ Burger Extras ➜ Add a Side)
